WhatsApp announces major service update

WhatsApp has announced a major change to the service that will give friends and family the chance to respond to what you say.

In plans that are already rolling out for some users, the “react” feature will allow users to show their feelings the same way they do on Facebook.

And phone users can even manage message response notifications without unlocking. While the update has yet to be mass installed, some users will be able to use the technology, the Daily Star reports.

iPhone users will get the first dibs on the update – with changes expected to allow management of group and individual chat notifications. It is currently unknown when Android users will have the option to use the neat feature.

Anyone can now download an update through the app’s beta program.

By signing up, users can test the latest experimental features for the app, some of which will never be seen by the general public. While the update gives you the ability to manage post comments, you can’t actually comment on posts yet.

WhatsApp insiders WABetaInfo said: “You can now manage when to get notifications for comments, for individual chats and groups, and what tone to play when you get those notifications.

“Unfortunately, it is still not possible to reply to messages, but the fact that it is possible to manage these settings suggests that message replies will be available very soon.”

Here’s how to register for the new update and try it out for everyone:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap Settings at the bottom right
  2. Tap Paired devices
  3. Tap on ‘Multi-Device Beta’
  4. Tap ‘Join Beta’

Once you’ve joined the beta program, you’ll be able to try out any new version of WhatsApp before it’s released to the general public.

And because not all features are ever widely used, it’s a good opportunity to try out some secret technology.
