Transition in Licensing of Microsoft Teams Rooms: Be Prepared
On Sept. 6, 2022, Microsoft introduced new licensing options for Microsoft Teams Rooms, called Teams Rooms Pro and Basic licenses. In addition, Microsoft announced a significant change regarding the use of M365/O365 (i.e. A, E, G) user subscription licenses for Teams Rooms deployments.
Effective July 1, 2023, customers, including Microsoft Surface Hub users, may no longer use user subscription licenses to log into their Microsoft Teams Rooms devices. This change was communicated appropriately to give customers enough time to prepare for this transition. It is necessary for customers to purchase and implement a Teams Rooms license.
This change also applies to devices registered with the Pro Management portal. To use the AI-powered device management capabilities of the Pro Management portal, a Teams Rooms Pro or Teams Rooms Premium license (legacy) is required.
We offer several resources to support you in this transition. This blog post provides an overview of the licensing changes, guidelines for verifying whether your organization uses user subscription licenses for Microsoft Teams Rooms and information on how to transition to the new licensing model.
Two new licensing options are available.
The Teams Rooms Pro license offers enhanced features, including intelligent audio and video, front row and large galleries, and two-screen support. There are also advanced management capabilities such as external device management, conditional access policies and detailed device analysis.
The Teams Rooms Basic license provides core meeting experiences at no additional cost. It includes planning, participating in meetings, sharing content and whiteboarding for collaboration.
We understand that choosing the right license for your organization can be complex, and our team is ready to support you in this choice.
Update licenses
Updating licenses can be a complex and time-consuming process for organizations. So we developed a simple, step-by-step process for checking small batches of devices, as well as an automated script for checking licenses in bulk to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Customers with existing Microsoft Teams Rooms Standard or Premium subscription licenses can reserve additional licenses under their existing contract to meet the new requirements.
