Microsoft Purview DLP: Enhanced Security & Management

Microsoft is taking new steps in data security with the recent enhancements to Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention. The latest updates improve protection, expand DLP capabilities and make daily activities easier for administrators.

First, Microsoft has introduced optical character recognition (OCR) support in the public preview in Microsoft Teams and Exchange Online. This security feature prevents sensitive information, such as social security numbers and credit card information, from being shared.

In addition, Microsoft is extending document fingerprinting support to Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint Online and Windows Endpoint. This function allows a standard form to be converted to a sensitive information type (SIT) that can be used in the rules configured for the DLP policy.

Furthermore, Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention has been enhanced with new features that prevent employees from pasting sensitive information on selected Web sites. IT administrators can now configure DLP policies to protect sensitive files stored on network shares.

Improved management capabilities for IT administrators

Finally, Microsoft announced several new management features for IT administrators. It is now possible to gain insights into the health and configuration status of all connected devices in the Microsoft Purview compliance portal. Microsoft also enabled a new feature that allows only limited admins to perform actions on selected users based on attributes such as department and geographic region.

Customers who want to try the new features should enable the built-in endpoint DLP feature on Windows 11 and 10 devices. Interested parties can also access upcoming preview features by signing up for the Microsoft Purview DLP Customer Connection Program (CCP).
