New developments for OneDrive at event on Oct. 3

Microsoft is filling its fall events calendar with the latest date of Oct. 3, 2023, reserved for an unveiling of new OneDrive features.

Titled The Future of File Management, Microsoft has confirmed an event at 1pm ET on Oct. 3 that will be part of the company’s Teams Live Event platform. Attendees will have a chance to get a first look at improvements to OneDrive, including faster file access, better organization and enhanced security, among others.

This new OneDrive-focused event is not announced as an experience for everyone, but rather is aimed at IT administrators, partners and general “Microsoft 365 enthusiasts.”

Interested parties can join Jeff Teper, leader of the product, design and engineering team for Microsoft 365, as he and other members of the OneDrive product team cover all the new features coming to OneDrive.

Teper and his team also plan a question-and-answer section following the announcement where participants can talk about roadmaps, insider access, employee sharing and tenant access, among other topics.

Earlier today, there were signs that significant changes are coming for OneDrive, with Microsoft announcing its new storage boost as a transitional phase for the evolution of its storage management. This will now double the photos counted in the default storage allocation in OneDrive.

It was also mentioned that Microsoft is bringing features of its AI-based Copilot platform to OneDrive, according to a leaked video highlighting the Oct. 3, 2023 event.

Microsoft has slowly but surely added more features for everyday use to OneDrive, bringing it more and more in line with the native File Explorer experience on Windows. It will be interesting to see how OneDrive fits into the next version of Windows and into the company’s fledgling mobile ambitions.
