Microsoft Teams gets a new compact mode for chats

The Microsoft Teams desktop app gets a new Compact mode that allows users to see 50 percent more messages on their screen. This should be a welcome update for people using the app on laptops where screen real estate is at a premium, although this new Compact mode doesn’t apply to channel messages.

In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, the company explained that this new Compact mode for chats will be rolled out in the Teams desktop app in mid-February. Once available, the option will appear in Settings > General > Chat Density, where users can choose between “Comfortable” (the current experience) and “Compact”. You can see what the new Compact Mode looks like in the image below:

The new Compact setting allows 50 percent more messages to fit on the screen.

The chat experience in Microsoft Teams is pretty solid right now with message responses, formatting options, and the ability to jump out of the chat window. Microsoft also recently rolled out chat federation with Microsoft Teams for consumers, which allows business users to invite Teams users to chat with an email address or phone number.

Microsoft announced last week that Teams has now surpassed 270 million active users, an impressive milestone for a service that will celebrate its 5th anniversary in March 2022. Microsoft has been itching the app quite quickly since launch, although it only took five years to get a very welcome Compact mode for chats.
