Here’s what’s new in the latest Microsoft Teams Phone update

Microsoft is focused on “the future of calling” and has features to facilitate that vision. With Microsoft Teams Phone, you can now easily transfer a call from desk to mobile, a move designed to make it easier to stay connected in a hybrid workplace.

What you need to know

  • Microsoft has new Teams Phone features available.
  • These include CarPlay support, spam call identification, call forwarding between devices and much more.
  • Teams Phone also has new features for organizations that still rely on public switched telephone networks (PSTNs).

According to Microsoft, nearly 80 million people not only use Microsoft Teams Phone, but also need them to improve the quality of their calls. If that claim sounds strange, you can include it in Microsoft’s blog post. In the meantime, here are the new features being introduced in Teams Phone to help those 80 million callers.

  • You can transfer live calls between devices.
  • Spam Call Identification.
  • Apple CarPlay support so Siri or your vehicle can help you with your calls.
  • Call transcription and recording capabilities for 1-on-1 conversations (goodbye notepads). This feature set will be fully available by the end of 2021.

In addition to these points, Microsoft is also committed to public switched telephone networks (PSTNs), although it states that Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the wave of the future. Here’s what PSTNs can expect from Teams Phone.

  • “Operator Connect”, which allows operator-based PSTN services to easily connect to Microsoft Teams.
  • Teams Calling subscriptions now serve a wider range of markets, including Croatia, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia and Lithuania.
  • The ability to bring your own contact center and use Microsoft’s Connect Contact Center program.

If you’ve gotten excited about all these features, capabilities, and service enhancements, know that the list of updates isn’t done yet; Microsoft has two more items to mention.

  • Walkie-talkie functionality for desk phones is coming in October 2021.
  • The “better together” experience continues to improve the functional synergy between the Teams client and Teams devices.
