Does my business need to be on all social media platforms?
Let’s answer this question with another question: do you really have the time to give your full attention to all the popular social media platforms out there?
Of course not! Business owners are busy people and they often have to divide their attention between different aspects of their brand. They may not be able to put in the amount of time and effort it takes to see real success on any social media platform. Plus, their target market might not use all the different platforms after all. For example, how many adults over 50 do you really see on TikTok?
So no, your business shouldn’t be on all social media platforms. However, this does not mean that you should abolish social media altogether. Instead, you need to identify and focus on the platforms that are likely to give you the most returns. Here are some tips to help you figure out which social media platforms to use for your business.
Which social media platforms does your target audience use?
While people often have multiple social media accounts, they tend to have a favorite platform or two where they spend most of their time. For example, check out the top age demographics for some of the hottest platforms in 2021 below:
- Facebook: 25-34
- Instagram: 25-34
- Twitter: 30-49
- LinkedIn: 46-55
- TikTok: 18-24
You can use this kind of information to find out where you are most likely to connect with your target audience. For example, if you’re looking for a younger demographic, you might want to try TikTok, Facebook, or Instagram.
Which platforms do you have the most experience with?
If you want to have a successful social media account for your business, you need to know your way around your platform(s) of choice. You need to know how to navigate the platform, how to use its different features, and what type of content gets the most attention.
There’s really little point in signing up for a particular platform if you don’t know how to use it, even if your audience is there. Remember, there are many people competing for attention on social media. Experienced users usually know a lot of tips and tricks to get their content noticed, so they will almost always outperform beginners. Therefore, before you connect your company to a platform, make sure you know all the ins and outs.
What kind of content do you have?
Some types of content will do better on certain social media platforms than others. For example, Instagram is known for its photos, TikTok is famous for its short videos, and LinkedIn is great for more informative content. Every platform has its niche and it is important to capitalize on this as much as possible if you want to see results.
So, when deciding which social media platform is right for your business, make sure you think about your content. An article will likely get a lot more attention on LinkedIn than Instagram, just like a video would get more views on TikTok than Twitter. Be strategic when choosing platforms as it can be the key to your success.
