Automatically delete meetings in Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams gets a new feature that automatically deletes meeting recordings from the cloud after a certain amount of time . The auto-expire option is currently in development and will roll out in late September, according to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.

Currently, Microsoft Teams meeting recordings are stored indefinitely and IT admins must manually delete these files to reduce storage clutter. This auto-expiration feature allows IT admins to set an expiration date for including files stored in SharePoint or OneDrive after a preset time period. “New recordings automatically expire 60 days after being recorded if no action is taken. The 60-day default was chosen because, on average for all tenants, most meeting recordings are never viewed after 60 days.” the company explained.

The end user is notified via email when a meeting recording is deleted from the cloud. However, the Office 365 administrators or users with edit/delete permissions have the option to retrieve that file within 90 days. Note that this change only applies to all new meeting recordings and does not affect existing meeting recordings.

Microsoft noted that this feature should help limit the amount of storage the Microsoft Teams recordings consume on OneDrive or SharePoint. However, Office 365 administrators can extend the default expiration date at the tenant level if needed. This change can be done through the Admin Portal (once available) or PowerShell scripts
