Walkie Talkie functionality in Microsoft Teams is now available

One of the coolest Microsoft Teams features is now available to everyone. Below are the main highlights:

  • The Walkie Talkie feature in Microsoft Teams is now available to all communication app users.
  • With Walkie Talkie, Microsoft Teams members can transform their smartphones or tablets into walkie-talkies that communicate over cellular data or Wi-Fi.
  • Microsoft has focused on frontline workers who interact with consumers and run the day-to-day operations of businesses.
  • The software company has partnered with Zebra Technologies to integrate a specialized push-to-talk button into a range of zebra mobile devices.

Microsoft Teams Walkie Talkie functionality is now available to all communication app users. With Walkie Talkie, Microsoft Teams users can transform their smartphones or tablets into a walkie-talkie that can communicate over cellular data or Wi-Fi. It was announced two years ago and has been in preview mode ever since.

Microsoft has focused this primarily on frontline staff, interacting with customers, and managing day-to-day operations within companies. In addition, the software developer is working with Zebra Technologies to include a specialized push-to-talk button in various Zebra mobile devices. These devices are often used by frontline workers, who have helped navigate the world through the ongoing pandemic.

Walkie-talkie capabilities are still uncommon in communications applications. WhatsApp allows users to record audio clips that can be sent and received, and Slack released its Discord-esque Huddles tool last year that allows users to join and exit calls seamlessly. In 2018, Apple launched its walkie-talkie capability on the Apple Watch, using push-to-talk over a FaceTime Audio call.
