Microsoft Outlook gets more ads – here’s how to remove them
Ads are now displayed in the primary inbox of Microsoft Outlook on iOS and Android, unless you pay for Microsoft 365 or use the inbox with focus.
What you need to know
- Microsoft Outlook on iOS and Android now displays more ads, including ads in the app’s primary inbox.
- Previously, Outlook only displayed ads on the Other tab.
- Users can choose to use the Targeted Inbox feature to display ads only in the Other section or pay for Microsoft 365 to remove ads completely.
Microsoft Outlook users on iOS and Android will now see more ads within the app. Microsoft has rolled out additional ads within Outlook in recent months, including ads in the email app’s primary inbox.
Outlook supports two methods of displaying emails. The app can present any email within one giant inbox or split emails into a “Targeted” tab and an “Other” tab. Previously, only the “Other” tab of Outlook showed ads, but that is no longer the case.
Microsoft has made the change gradually, so chances are that most users will encounter the increased ads. Many turned to social media to complain about the move.
Others pointed out that Outlook is a free service, so ads are to be expected.
It is possible to remove ads from Outlook on iOS and Android, although you must pay for the privilege. If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, all ads are removed from Outlook applications.
“For free Outlook users, ads are displayed in their inbox and they can choose to turn on the ‘Focused inbox’ feature if they want to see ads only in the ‘Other’ inbox,” a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge.
Although the ads are clearly labeled, they are displayed in the general inbox feed and look different from normal emails.
If the ads in Outlook prove to be too much, there are plenty of alternatives. Spark is one of the best mail apps for iPhone and iPad and is also available on Android.
