Microsoft unveils plan for Shared Calling via Teams Telephony

Microsoft is introducing an innovative way for organizations to sign up for “Shared Calling” through Teams Telephony. This approach is designed for organizations where not every user needs a fixed telephone number for calls over the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

Why choose Shared Calling?

Instead of individual numbers for each user, “Shared Calling” allows administrators to set up a central phone number. This number is associated with an Auto attendant, who helps callers reach the right person or department. In addition, this setup reduces costs for organizations because there is no need to assign a separate number for each user.

Configuring Shared Calling

Setting up this feature requires several steps:

  1. Assigning Teams Phone licenses.
  2. Link a number to the resource account for incoming and outgoing calls.
  3. Setting the Auto attendant.
  4. Link a location for emergency calls.
  5. And a few more technical steps.

For now, “Shared Calling” can only be configured via PowerShell, with the required version of Teams PowerShell Module 5.5.0 or higher.

Teams replaces Live Events with Town Halls

Microsoft recently announced that “Teams Live Events” will give way to “Town Hall,” a new virtual experience. This change is intended to provide a better user experience and will officially be available from Oct. 5, 2023.

Other updates

There are also some other exciting announcements, such as the arrival of immersive Teams meetings with Microsoft Mesh, and important changes to Teams’ SIP certification.

In summary, Microsoft continues to innovate and make improvements to its Teams platform to provide a seamless communication experience.
