New Security Rules for Gmail and Google Workspace

Google is rolling out a major security update for Gmail and Google Workspace.
Users have until Sept. 30, 2024, to adapt to the new security protocols.
After this deadline, less secure login methods will be disabled.
This affects apps or devices that still use simple password-based logins, such as โ€œless secure apps.โ€

Hereโ€™s everything you need to know about these changes and how to prepare! ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿ“Œ What exactly is changing?

  • End of Google Sync: Google Sync, which was used to sync emails, calendars and contacts on older apps such as Outlook, is no longer supported.
  • Stop less secure apps: Apps and devices that use simple username-password authentication are no longer supported.
This is especially true for older email clients such as Outlook 2016 and Thunderbird.
  • Mandatory switch to OAuth 2.0.: Gmail and Google Workspace accounts must switch to OAuth 2.0 to access third-party apps.
This protocol provides additional security without requiring usernames and passwords to be shared directly with third-party apps.
  • Outdated e-mail clients: Users of older e-mail clients such as Outlook 2016 may experience login problems if they do not switch in time.
  • Increased security: While this update significantly improves security, users who do not update their apps should do so soon to maintain access.
  • Mobile devices: Older mobile devices or apps that do not support OAuth will no longer be able to connect to Gmail, preventing you from accessing emails, calendars or contacts. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

๐ŸŽฏ What does this mean for Gmail and Google Workspace users?

If you are still using outdated login methods, you risk being unable to access your account after the deadline.
Itโ€™s important to take action now to avoid problems in the future!

โœ… What can you do?

  • Upgrade your email client: Switch to newer versions of e-mail clients such as Outlook 365 or the latest version of Thunderbird, which support OAuth 2.0.
  • Use Googleโ€™s native apps: Consider using Gmailโ€™ s web client or the official Google apps for Android and iOS for hassle-free access.
  • Reconfigure your accounts with OAuth: Update third-party apps so that they use OAuth 2.0 for authentication.
Google offers detailed tutorials to help you do this.
  • Remove and re-add your account: On devices such as iOS Mail and macOS Mail, you may need to remove and re-add your Google account to ensure OAuth is used. ๐Ÿ”„
