Microsoft Teams webs are getting significantly better.

There’s been quite a bit of news this week when Microsoft hosts its annual Ignite conference, but some items stand out more than others. In this case, Microsoft casually said they will introduce a new “webinars” feature into Teams.

Later this year, Teams will support the registration and reporting of webinars. This feature allows organizers to use event registration with (automated) reminder emails before an event starts and view detailed analysis after the webinar.

While not everyone needs this functionality, this is a big announcement. For many large (and small) organizations, we organize quite a few webinars and use third-party services, such as GoTo Webinar.

Once this feature has been rolled out and thoroughly tested for the user experience, many other organizations should be able to switch to Teams for this type of community activity and reduce spending on software licenses for other platforms.

Given the size of Teams’ footprint in the business world, this feature could cause a significant backlash across existing platforms that specialize in this segment. Webinars are being used in the marketing and education world as a way to connect with an audience and are becoming increasingly popular, as personal events are sidelined in 2020 and probably in 2021.

Microsoft says this feature should appear sometime later this year, but when it will reach your specific tenant is a very different question. That said, once this feature is rolled out, we’ll have a deeper dive to better understand its features and limitations.
