Healthcare facility without an IT department?
Then IT sometimes feels like a necessary evil….
Many healthcare practices – think of a physical therapy practice with four treatment rooms or a general practitioner’s office with changing observers – lack a full-fledged IT structure. Sometimes there is no IT department at all. And you notice that. Not necessarily when everything is working, but as soon as something goes wrong … then it’s panic.
Recognizable? We often hear this in healthcare
We regularly speak to practices and institutions such as:
-
A mental health institution where files circulate via USB and mail
-
A home health agency without a clear IT manager
-
Small healthcare practices dependent on ‘someone who knows a thing or two’
And then along comes this:
❌ No visibility into who has access to patient data
❌ No backup or contingency plan
❌ Waiting for help if IT fails
❌ No certainty whether patient data is properly secured
❌ No structure: where are files? OneDrive? SharePoint? Mail?
Everyone is just doing whatever … literally
We asked healthcare providers: what is the biggest IT pain point for you in practice?
These were the results of the poll (84 votes)¹:
-
47%: “Everyone is just doing whatever”
-
24%: Ad hoc and unclear
-
18%: No grip on data security
-
12%: NEN7510? Huh … what’s that?
Those last two in particular are worrisome. Because you work with sensitive information, and you are partly responsible for it.
Why NEN7510 is not an afterthought
At ALTA-ICT B.V., we are in the process of completing our NEN7510 certificationspecifically focused on information security in healthcare. With this we want to help smaller practices and institutions to get a grip on their IT – without having to set up an entire IT department.
Among other things, we help with:
🔹 Access and rights to patient data
🔹 Backup strategy and recovery plan
🔹 Structure in storage (SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams)
🔹 Insight and control over data flows
🔹 Guidance toward NEN7510 compliance
Healthcare ICT doesn’t have to be complicated
A few practical steps often make all the difference. So that you can say, “We’ve got it together.”
