Retiring passwords? The future of access management in SMEs

Every day over 600 million identity attacks take place worldwide. 99% of them target something we all use — the password.

On World Password Day, we and our network looked to the future: shouldn’t passwords just be retired?

Passwords work … until they don’t

Everyone knows it: thinking up yet another password. Or even worse, forgetting it at a crucial moment. Meanwhile, cybercriminals are on the fast track as soon as you use a weak or reused combination.

And let’s face it: the idea that a few characters protect your identity online is no longer tenable anno 2025. Time for something better.

What does the network think?

We posed the question to our network¹: What do you think is the future of access management?

These were the results among 95 voters:

  • ✅ A mix of everything, depending on risk – 57%

  • Security keys (passkeys & biometrics) – 20%.

  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) – 14%.

  • ️ Face recognition – 6%

  • Traditional passwords – 3%

The trend is clear: organizations want flexible, risk-based access rather than one fixed system.

What does this mean for your organization?

For many SMBs, access management is something that “just has to work. But in the meantime:

  • Do colleagues use private email or Dropbox for work files

  • Is there no visibility into who has access to what in SharePoint

  • Is MFA turned on only after something has gone wrong

That can be done smarter.

With solutions like Zero Trust, security keys, and automatic risk-based policies, you can ensure that access is both secure and user-friendly – without passwords as the weak link.

Recognizable?

Are you curious how your organization can move step by step to smarter access management? Or would you just like to spar about MFA, passkeys or Zero Trust?
