NEN 7510: information security in healthcare – also as an ICT partner

In this concluding blog, we zoom in on NEN 7510: the Dutch standard for information security in healthcare. What makes this standard special? Why is it relevant for ICT partners such as ALTA-ICT, even if we have no direct access to patient data? And what does this mean concretely for our customers?

What is NEN 7510?

NEN 7510 is the Dutch standard for information security in healthcare. Basically, it leans heavily on ISO 27001, but contains additional requirements specifically aimed at protecting medical and patient data. Consider rules on who has access to what information, how data may be processed and where it must be stored. Preferably within Europe.

Although ALTA-ICT itself has limited or no access to patient records, NEN 7510 certification is important. Why? Because healthcare institutions use this standard as a standard when selecting ICT partners. Even if there is no direct access to sensitive data, as a supplier you are expected to demonstrate that information is safe with you.

Why ALTA-ICT certifies for NEN 7510

For ALTA-ICT this certification is not a compulsory number, but a conscious choice. We want our customers – also in healthcare – can count on demonstrable security and reliability. It is not just about claiming that we have it well organized, but that we can actually show this. Especially in an industry where sensitive information and privacy are central, this is crucial.

Also, NEN 7510 is chain-oriented. This means that as an ICT partner you are not only responsible for your own processes, but must also demonstrate that your suppliers and tools used handle data securely. At ALTA-ICT we have checked this down to the detail: for example, we know for sure that all the data we manage is stored on European servers. We can guarantee that. And that is what this standard demands.

NEN 7510 offers our clients in the healthcare sector the assurance that their information is in safe hands with us.
