“Is this website allowed to access your local network?”

What this new Chrome notification means for your SMB business

Imagine this: you open a website in Google Chrome and suddenly get the question:

🔒 “Is this website allowed to access your local network?”

Sounds technical? Yet this is exactly what users will soon see in version 138 of Google Chrome. But what does it actually mean? And why is it important for your business?

🔍 What exactly is changing?

Google is introducing a new security measure:

  • Websites must now ask explicit permission to access your local network or devices on it

  • This helps prevent attacks such as CSRF, in which hackers try to access your network through the browser

  • So you get a pop-up with the choice: allow or block

Sounds logical. But fair is fair … Who doesn’t just click “Allow” in the rush? 🖱️

🤯 And meanwhile…

While you are quickly clicking “allow,” much more is happening behind the scenes:

  • Your browser remembers all your passwords

  • Company data floats between Google Drive, Gmail and OneDrive

  • You don’t always know who has access to what

That suddenly makes such a simple pop-up a lot more relevant. Because you don’t want to run any risks with your company data – especially if you also work hybrid or with different devices.

💡 What can you do?

With the right IT setup and support, you can greatly reduce this type of risk:

✅ Set tight access rights
✅ Automate backups
✅ Keep track of who is doing what in your Microsoft 365 environment
✅ Get help with security settings such as this new browser option

It is often small things that make the difference between a safe and unsafe workplace.
