Essential Tips for macOS Security

Securing your macOS device is crucial in a world where cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated. To protect your data and behavior, there are some essential configurations you can apply right away. These settings minimize risk without compromising usability. Here are the must-haves for a secure macOS experience! 🔐

🔑 1. Disable password autofill and sharing¹

Autofill and password sharing can be a weakness in your security:

  • 📋 Why. Auto-filling passwords makes you vulnerable to phishing attacks and malicious apps.
  • 🛠 How?
    • Go to System Settings > Passwords and disable autofill.
    • Use a password manager specifically designed for security, such as 1Password or LastPass.

📡 2. Limit sharing functions such as SMB and Bluetooth².

Unnecessary sharing options can be an entry point for attackers:

  • 🚫 SMB (Server Message Block): This protocol is often abused in ransomware attacks.
  • 🔵 Bluetooth: Make sure Bluetooth is on only when it is really needed.

Actions:

  • Go to System Settings > Sharing and disable anything you don’t use (for example, File Sharing and Printer Sharing).
  • Turn on Bluetooth only when it is really needed via the Menu bar > Bluetooth.

☁️ 3. Disable iCloud services to keep data local³.

iCloud is convenient, but it also means your data is in the cloud:

  • 🛡 Risk: Online storage can be vulnerable to data breaches.
  • 📍 Solution: Keep sensitive data local to your device.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Open System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud and disable features such as iCloud Drive and Messages in iCloud.
  • Consider a local backup solution, such as Time Machine.

Bonus Tips for Additional Security

Want to go one step further? Then consider these measures as well:

  • Use FileVault: Encrypt your hard drive through System Settings > Security and Privacy.
  • Set a strong password: Use at least 12 characters, with a combination of letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Install a firewall: Make sure your built-in firewall is on through System Settings > Network > Firewall.
