Data theft at Ahold Delhaize: how vulnerable is your employee data?
When everything works, you don’t hear anyone. But as soon as a data breach occurs – as happened recently at Ahold Delhaize – then panic sets in. BSN numbers, addresses, personnel data … all out on the street. This kind of incident feels far away, until it affects your own organization.
The attack on Albert Heijn and Etos potentially captured sensitive employee data. It’s another wake-up call for SME organizations: how well is your data secured?
The weakest link? We asked on LinkedIn¹
We put the question to our network:
🧠 What do you think is the weakest link in data protection?
The results speak volumes:
-
69% chose employees
-
23% cited outdated systems
-
5% indicated that outside parties increase the risk
-
3% had no idea
No surprise to us: employees are often the first line of defense – as well as the greatest vulnerability. An inadvertent click, unconscious action or wrongly shared file can be enough.
What can you do?
You can’t prevent everything. But you can be much smarter about dealing with risks:
🔹 Regular awareness training
🔹 Secure access to systems (including at home)
🔹 Clear agreements on data sharing
🔹 An IT partner who proactively looks on
Because one thing is certain: hoping for the best is not a strategy.
