Data breach at Dutch research institution affects >35,000 researchers

It was recently announced that a serious data leak occurred at a Dutch research institution. The personal data of more than 35,000 researchers were exposed. This information has since been shared on private hacker forums in the Deep Web π¨ΒΉ.
What exactly was leaked? π΅οΈββοΈ
From the leaked data set, it appears that it involves:

π Passwords encrypted with SHA1 and Base64 (outdated methods!)
This type of encryption is relatively easy to crack with modern techniques, which increases the risk of misuse.
