Are you allowed to install anything on your work computer?

Why that’s a risk to your entire organization

Imagine: you can download anything on your work computer. Install any program, with no restrictions. No IT watching or asking why.
Sounds like freedom, right?

But what if one click is enough to take down your entire network?

One click can be enough

In many SMB organizations, this is (unknowingly) the default. Employees have all rights on their work devices. Anything goes. No questions. No barriers.

The problem?
Cyber attacks don’t always come through the front door. Often it’s an innocent attachment. A “free” tool. A fake update. And with too much freedom, the risk is life-altering.

Poll: How do others deal with this?

We asked this question on LinkedIn¹:
How is security handled on your work computer? Are you allowed to install anything or is there control?

Out of 60 votes it showed:

  • ✅ 47% have strict policies + monitoring

  • ✅ 35% use only whitelisted software

  • ⚠️ 13% indicate: anything goes, total freedom

  • ❓ 5% actually don’t know…

The good news: a majority have control.
The worrisome news: 1 in 8 still work completely without any restrictions.

Therefore: Zero Trust

At ALTA-ICT, we work according to the Zero Trust principle.
Not because we don’t trust anyone. But because we KNOW that attacks happen.

Zero Trust means:

  • No default admin rights

  • Monitoring installations and behavior

  • Access only what you really need

  • Trust is earned, not assumed

The beauty?
That doesn’t have to frustrate your team. With the right approach and tools, it just works smoothly – AND safely.
